«How to Be a Millionaire» is a film based on the real story of Michael Larson — an ordinary American who managed to beat a popular television game show not through luck, but through attentiveness, memory, and a mathematical approach. This alone makes the film interesting, because such stories really do happen extremely rarely.

If we talk about the plot without details and major spoilers, the main character watches the quiz show for a long time and notices that the game board is not random at all. He realizes that the sequence of prize and penalty squares follows a certain algorithm. Instead of relying on luck, he literally memorizes all possible combinations and comes to the show already fully prepared. What follows is a real confrontation between a man and a system that is convinced it cannot be beaten.

By and large, there is no deep morality or hidden meaning in this film. I chose it for review for one single reason: it is a real and very unusual story. Although if you try to find a meaning here, first and foremost the film is about how far a person can go if they devote themselves to a single goal. While others rely on chance, the main character spends a huge amount of time on observation, analysis, and training. His victory becomes the result of effort, not luck. Moreover, the film makes you think about the very nature of rules. If a person has not broken a single rule but managed to use the system's features to their advantage — can that be considered cheating?

Among the pros, I would note the unusual true story, the tension in the form of intrigue and excitement that remains even despite the lack of action. The very idea of the film is also worth mentioning.

Among the cons, it can be noted that the film is made quite modestly: there is no action here, and almost all of the action takes place in one location. In addition, some scenes and lines were invented, which is quite understandable — it is hard to make a full-length film based on just one episode of a TV show.

Thus, this is a one-time watch. But I hope that after that single viewing, you will want to find out how much of it was true, and to read the story of Michael Larson himself.
